Message Automatics:

You're back driving the transmission (i.e. turning all the planetary sets, clutch packs and gears via the wrong end). The transmission oil pump is connected to the input shaft (i.e. it is *always* rotating at engine RPM), but the engine is off, which means no oil flow and a burnt out automatic transmission. The AA (Automobile Association) towing rules for the UK state you can only tow and auto Z at less than 20mph for less than 10 miles. (I know, because they sent a guy out to recover me once.. without a flatbed.. grrr..)

You can get the engine to pump fluid around the trans simply by running in neutral, however your gearbox will be going an awful lot faster than it should be for the oil flow (engine @ idle, gearbox at XXmph), and you'll likely still damage the transmission.

Manual cars:

Again you are backdriving the transmission. IIRC the oil pump is again connected to the input shaft - your gearbox will be in neutral, ergo no oil flow = bang.

You can't pump oil round the gearbox because the car would have to be in gear (unlike the auto where the engine is always connected to the oil pump).

Not to mention the simple fact that you are putting energy into the gearbox at the wrong end - mechanicals are generally designed with a specific set of forces and energies in mind.. and these weren't in mind :)

Suffice to say that It Is A Bad Thing (tm).
